A conversation with Jonny Wilkinson
- Hello M. Wilkinson, I'm Lola. And I have to ask any questions how are you? I am very interested in rugby. Maybe you could give me some information?
- Hi ! Yes yes, of course. There are no worries! I'm here for that ... How can I help you?
- When did you first start playing rugby?
- I started when I was four years old. I grew up with a rugby ball rather than a football. My brother was into rugby and we had a very sporty family. So it was just what I knew from a young age and then I decided I liked it.
- But you did play some football didn't you?
- I did. I played footy for about one year - it was mainly a social thing. I played rugby mainly but I played footy one or twice a week.
- Was it always your dream to play for England?
-Yes it was. When I was 10 or 11, I thought 'That's what I want to do!' . I wrote it down on a bit of paper, kept referring back to it and making sure I did as much as I could to keep to that path.
- What would you hadn't been a professional rugby player?
- I'm a big animal fan, I get on very well with animals. People who work with animals like vets or the RSPCA and helping animals that sort of thing appeals to me in a way, when I was younger certainly.
But I think I was always such a sporty person I figured if I wasn't a professional rugby player I would have just tried hard at another sport - just to make sure I got to play sport for a living.

My favorite team
Madrid Lions R.F.C. welcomes anybody who would like to play, coach or ref rugby during their time in Madrid. Regardless of level or experience, any member who turns out for a game on a Saturday afternoon and is picked for the team is guaranteed some time on the pitch. The social aspect of the club is truly important and while we are competitive on the field, the “tercer tiempo” after the game is just as important as an opportunity to forge and maintain (over pints and “tapas”) the good relations we have with teams all over Spain and beyond. Just ask any Lion about the infamous “third halfs” down at Finnegan’s.

The fauna and flora
The kiwi
The Kiwi living in New Zealand and small islands nearby. It hunts at night. This bird, shy, is endangered. It does not fly. It measures about 50 centimeters. It is the national emblem of New Zealand. Kiwis males are smaller than females. Kiwi's nostrils are unique among birds, they are near the end of the spout. Kiwis have no tail, the wings are hidden under their thick plumage.
The
kiwi lives in burrows where it does comes out at night to feed on
insects and berries, which are ground and it is through his nose. The Kiwi has bad eyes.
The breeding and export of sheep is a major economic resource of New Zealand. There are in the country of 60 million sheep to 4 million inhabitants.
Sperm whales
These whales are year-round in the waters of New Zealand, they are especially visible in Kaikoura where specialized companies are discovering you.
The Kéa
The Kea is a parrot nestor mountain endemic to New Zealand. It inhabits the mountain forests and grasslands of the Southern Alps of New Zealand, on land usually difficult to cross and exposed to a harsh climate. He is the only mountain parrot world. It is a very intelligent animal that has absolutely no fear of man, perfect for photos, but beware he is thief, do not leave your bag unattended, he would eat the contents.
It is the smallest dolphin in the world, it is only present in New Zealand. There are only a few thousands of dolphins, the species is threatened with extinction if nothing is done to preserve it.
The Weta
These are big grasshoppers, natives of New Zealand. Some insects are among the largest and heaviest in the world. They are harmless but they tend to surprise when you fall over without warning.
From Wellington to the tip of the south, you'll see a little fur seals everywhere. They are often quiet, but it is recommended not to get too close.
The silver fern
The
fern is so common in New Zealand, which is found everywhere in stylized
advertisements and official documents, it has now become a real
landmark for the country.
The pohutukawa
LI
is known as the Christmas tree in New Zealand, not so much for its
foliage or form, but because it produces masses of brilliant red flowers
in spikes toward Christmas (of course at the beginning of summer in New
Zealand).
The Kauri
This is the legendary tree of New Zealand, the Maori have historically used to build canoes and carved statues. We need 800 years to a Kauri to reach its maximum size! The kauri live over 1000 years. They measure about 50 meters in height. About its circumference, it is more than 10 meters.
What do we eat in new Zealand?
- Already, many fruits (which are produced in the country). Apples, kiwis, peaches, lawyers and others are very present in feeding. New Zealand is culturally very close to the Great Britain.
- The traditional pasta / ham French is not at all common, it's more bacon and English breakfast.
- The "Marmite", very widespread in New Zealand. It is a black paste that is spread on bread or toast.I think it's very good but i never eat that. Maybe it would be good to try?
- Another thing is the coffee, do not try to make an espresso, they'll take you for an extraterrestrial. In New Zealand, coffee and tea will often drink with milk.
- The lamb is typically British. With so many sheep in the country, we must eat a few. No? I'm kidding, everyone's opinion but the lamb chops go very well with the kumara (sweet potato in the country).
